Unless you follow poker news or play online poker, you may not realize that the World Series of Poker is getting set to begin at the Rio in Las Vegas. The biggest poker event of the year is almost here. However, the general advertising for this major poker championship has only just begun. Poker players from around the world are gearing up for the event that will begin in two weeks’ time, sharpening their skills, and preparing their poker face.
Players from all over the world will converge on the Rio to play the many Texas Hold’Em events that will determine the nine players who will sit down at the final table in November. They will have won their spots in the events by playing qualifying tournaments both at real live events and online events. Other players will be at the event to play other poker variations, such as Omaha and Stud games. Anyone going to the WSOP hopes to leave with one of the championship bracelets and their names on the winners’ list.
To many poker players, the WSOP is a chance to buy into a championship game for a small amount. Many people qualify for the satellite games based on a small wager during the qualifiers that is a fraction of what the total buy-in could be. Some of the players also win sponsorships from the many different online poker rooms and actually get their buy-in money from the poker room themselves. Las Vegas was built on the hope that everyone who plays there – whether from China, England, Belgium or the United States – leaves the city with more than they arrived with.
Poker players have been preparing for the event for months, taking poker classes that help them work on their game, including strategies, bluffing, and other poker related issues. Whether they have been playing extra games at their local casinos or have joined online poker rooms to practice, players are hoping to be well prepared to face professional players such as Chris ‘Jesus’ Ferguson, and Phil Ivey. Players will need to be more prepared than ever as the competition continues to become tougher and tougher.
Even with the American economic slump affecting the world, casinos are still being built in the United States and proving to be successful. The popularity of poker – especially Texas Hold’Em – has helped the casinos grow. The WSOP is the best chance for a player to test their skills and is still the premier championship game on an international level.
