Real Women Play Poker

Poker has had an incredible success the last years, and thanks to the many online casinos and poker rooms the success has had an even higher impact than otherwise could have been imagined. The poker fever not only affects the male population, but poker is also turning into one of the most popular card games among female players. What once was an exclusive male territory in dodgy backrooms has now become one of the favorite pastimes of women. And the fun has only just begun. Women seem to be increasingly attracted to the game, and skip other popular games, such as bingo to take up the challenge of poker game. The casinos already smelled the wind of change, and are now providing their customers with both tutorials for newbies, hen night and birthday packages. All of which are soaring in popularity.

Do women manage well in this new found game? It seems that women for once can take advantage of men’s inherent discrimination and belittling of their skills. Some female poker players claim that it is not a problem to play against men, and they do not feel intimidated by male superiority. They state that men tend to miscalculate the abilities of women, and perceive them as very emotional and therefore unable to bluff. Furthermore men believe that women do not have the guts to go all the way, and raise it all. This underestimation of women by men when playing poker provides the women with a possibility to compete fairly against a man and come out on top. In spite of this, there are quite a few only women’s poker tournaments taking place and ladies poker nights.

It is a fact that women do well at the poker tables. There are quite a few female poker players who are in the top poker league, such as Jennifer Harman, Annie Duke, Barbara Entright and Isabelle Mercer. They have all done very well in the World Series of Poker or European Poker Tour. Both Barbara Entright and Jennifer Harman are winners of the much desired WSOP bracelet. No to mention the shooting star, Anette Obrestrand, the 19 year old Norwegian who made her debut at the international poker tables last year, by taking home notorious prizes. But even on a less grand scale women are doing really well. A 2005 poll showed that 40 % of online poker players were women. The fact that poker moved out of the backroom and into the virtual space where its accessibility is much more comfortable, has boosted the popularity among women. Poker has become house trained and now it seem as there is no stopping the women from conquering this exciting card game.
