Our Internet Poker Site is Not Technically On Line Gambling

Two recent college graduates from Illinois have decided to hold a series of on line gambling tournaments for university students, with poker as the game of choice.

Craig Rabin and Jason Beck first conceived of the idea of hosting an on line gambling tournament for students when they were college students at Illinois State University in Normal and at the University of Miami, respectively.

The on line gambling tournament does not, they say, break the law because it does not actually fit the conventional, legal definition of on line gambling. Instead of wagering money on each hand, students play for free. They are competing for college scholarships of up to $20,000, which are donated by a variety of charitable organizations.

Rabin and Beck hosted six so- called on line gambling tournaments this year, and plan to up that number to 20 or 30 next year. Some universities, they say, have been somewhat resistant to lending their names to an on line gambling- related activity. Others, however, have told the pair that their project provides an excellent opportunity for students to partake in an exciting, drug- free activity.
